How CELPIP scores convert to CLB
The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) are the national standard Canada uses to describe English ability on a 12-level scale. CELPIP-General was built around that same scale, which makes the conversion refreshingly simple: your CELPIP level in each section is your CLB level. There is no separate lookup or rounding the way there is with IELTS.
IRCC always works in CLB levels, not raw test numbers. When an Express Entry program asks for “CLB 7” or a pool draw references your language ability, the CELPIP equivalent is the matching level: CELPIP 7 is CLB 7. The one wrinkle is the top of the scale. For CRS points, anything at CLB 10 or above is grouped together, so CELPIP 10, 11 and 12 all earn the same maximum language points.
| CELPIP level | CLB level | CRS pts / ability (single) | CRS pts / ability (with spouse) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | CLB 12 | 34 | 32 |
| 11 | CLB 11 | 34 | 32 |
| 10 | CLB 10 | 34 | 32 |
| 9 | CLB 9 | 31 | 29 |
| 8 | CLB 8 | 23 | 22 |
| 7 | CLB 7 | 17 | 16 |
| 6 | CLB 6 | 9 | 8 |
| 5 | CLB 5 | 6 | 6 |
| 4 | CLB 4 | 6 | 6 |
| M | Below CLB 4 | 0 | 0 |
Points shown are for the first official language, per ability (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Maximum totals: 136 for a single applicant, 128 with a spouse or common-law partner.
CLB to CRS points: what each level is worth
Already know your CLB level? Here is exactly how many Express Entry CRS points it earns for the first official language, per ability and across all four skills. These are the same numbers the calculator uses - CLB and CELPIP share the 1 to 12 scale, so a CLB 9 row is a CELPIP 9 row.
Two rows matter most. CLB 9 is where you unlock the maximum skill-transferability bonuses, and CLB 10 is where your core language points top out at 34 per ability (32 with a spouse). Everything above CLB 10 counts the same for points.
| CLB level | CELPIP | CRS total (single) | CRS total (spouse) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10+ | CELPIP 10-12 | 136 (34/skill) | 128 (32/skill) | Maximum core language points |
| CLB 9 | CELPIP 9 | 124 (31/skill) | 116 (29/skill) | Unlocks maximum skill-transferability bonuses |
| CLB 8 | CELPIP 8 | 92 (23/skill) | 88 (22/skill) | - |
| CLB 7 | CELPIP 7 | 68 (17/skill) | 64 (16/skill) | Minimum for most Express Entry programs |
| CLB 6 | CELPIP 6 | 36 (9/skill) | 32 (8/skill) | - |
| CLB 4-5 | CELPIP 4-5 | 24 (6/skill) | 24 (6/skill) | CLB 4 is the citizenship floor (Listening + Speaking) |
| Below CLB 4 | CELPIP M-3 | 0 (0/skill) | 0 (0/skill) | Below the Express Entry language minimum |
Bonus: add French for up to +50 CRS points
Your English CLB sets the points above. If you also sit TEF Canada or TCF Canada and reach NCLC 7 or higher (the French equivalent of CLB 7) in all four abilities, you earn extra CRS points on top:
- +25NCLC 7+ in all four French skills, with CLB 4 or lower in English (or no English test).
- +50NCLC 7+ in all four French skills, with CLB 5+ in all four English skills.
Key CLB thresholds to aim for
- CLB 4 (CELPIP 4): minimum Listening and Speaking for Canadian citizenship.
- CLB 5 (CELPIP 5): common floor for several Provincial Nominee streams and trades.
- CLB 7 (CELPIP 7): minimum for most Express Entry programs (FSW and CEC).
- CLB 9 (CELPIP 9): unlocks the maximum skill-transferability bonuses tied to your education and work experience. Going higher adds no more transferability points.
- CLB 10 (CELPIP 10+): maxes out your core CRS language points at 34 per ability (32 with a spouse) - the true ceiling. CELPIP 10, 11 and 12 all count as CLB 10 here.
Why language is worth chasing
Language is one of the few CRS factors you can still move quickly. Going from CLB 7 to CLB 9 across all four abilities adds meaningful core points, and at CLB 9 you also unlock the higher tiers of the skill transferability bonuses tied to your education and work experience. Push to CLB 10 and your core language points hit their ceiling. For many candidates, the fastest route to a competitive score is simply a higher CELPIP result, and Speaking is usually where the easiest points are hiding.

CLB, CRS and CELPIP questions
How do I convert my CLB level to CRS points?
Your CLB level sets the first official language portion of your CRS score, awarded per ability. For a single applicant: CLB 7 earns 17 points per skill (68 total), CLB 8 earns 23 (92 total), CLB 9 earns 31 (124 total), and CLB 10 or higher earns the maximum 34 (136 total). With a spouse the per-ability values are 16, 22, 29 and 32. The calculator above turns any set of four CLB levels into the exact point total for both cases.
How many CRS points is CLB 9 vs CLB 10?
For a single applicant, CLB 9 across all four abilities gives 124 first-language CRS points and CLB 10 or higher gives the maximum 136 - a difference of 12 core points (3 per ability). With a spouse it is 116 versus 128. CLB 10 is the ceiling for core language points, but CLB 9 is the level that unlocks the maximum skill-transferability bonuses, so most candidates target at least CLB 9 and treat CLB 10 as the final squeeze.
Is CLB the same as CRS?
No. CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) is the 1 to 12 scale that describes your English or French ability. CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) is the points system Express Entry uses to rank candidates out of 1,200. Your CLB level feeds into the CRS as language points - a higher CLB means more CRS points - but they are two different things: CLB measures language, CRS ranks your whole profile.
How do I convert my CELPIP score to a CLB level?
CELPIP was designed around the Canadian Language Benchmarks, so the conversion is one to one. Your CELPIP-General level in each section is your CLB level: CELPIP 9 equals CLB 9, CELPIP 7 equals CLB 7, and so on. A score of M (minimal proficiency) sits below CLB 4. IRCC uses your CLB level, not your raw CELPIP number, to assess immigration eligibility.
What CLB level do I need for Express Entry?
Most Express Entry programs require at least CLB 7 in all four abilities to be eligible. The Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Canadian Experience Class for skilled jobs both use CLB 7 as the minimum. CLB 9 or higher is the threshold where you start earning the most CRS language points and unlock the higher skill transferability bonuses, so many candidates aim for CELPIP 9 across the board.
Do CELPIP 10, 11 and 12 give more CRS points than CLB 10?
No. For CRS language points, every result of CLB 10 or higher is treated the same and earns the maximum (34 points per ability for a single applicant, 32 with a spouse). CELPIP 10, 11 and 12 all map to that top band, so scoring above 10 does not add language points. It can still matter for other requirements and for second-language or French bonuses.
Can I get extra CRS points for French?
Yes. If you also sit TEF Canada or TCF Canada and reach NCLC 7 or higher (equivalent to CLB 7) in all four French abilities, you earn a French bonus on top of your English points: 25 additional CRS points if your English is CLB 4 or lower (or you did not take an English test), and 50 additional points if your English is CLB 5 or higher in all four skills. French is often the single fastest way to add points once your English is solid.
What CLB level do I need for Canadian citizenship?
Adult citizenship applicants must show CLB 4 or higher in Listening and Speaking, which is CELPIP 4 in those two sections. Citizenship only assesses speaking and listening, not reading or writing, and the bar is lower than Express Entry.
Is CELPIP the same as CLB?
They are related but not identical. CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) is the national standard that describes English ability on a scale from 1 to 12. CELPIP is one of the tests IRCC accepts, and its General version is scored on the same 12-level scale so the numbers line up directly. CLB is the benchmark; CELPIP is a way to measure where you sit on it.
Did the Express Entry CRS change in 2025?
Yes. As of March 25, 2025, IRCC removed the points previously awarded for a valid job offer (50 points for most skilled jobs, 200 for senior management). This does not affect language points. The CELPIP to CLB conversion and the language point tables used by this calculator reflect the current IRCC criteria.
Conversion figures are based on the official IRCC CELPIP-to-CLB equivalency and the Comprehensive Ranking System criteria (current as of the 2025 IRCC update).
